An International Summer Course by Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology (CICP) & Center for Life-Span Development (CLSD) Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Gadjah Mada
Course Overview
Cultural Dynamics and Life-Span Development is an international summer course held by the Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology and the Center for Life-Span Development, Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. This summer course will mainly discuss current issues in cultural dynamics and life-span development. Ultimately, this research will be divided into two sections: research and intervention. Students will gain insight from current research and interventions through panel presentations with experts.
This course will help students re-understand the role of culture in life-span human development. We will explore the culture and life-span development paradigm in a contemporary context. Using an indigenous approach, we will study the context of social relations in Java, how resettlement life affects adolescent development, and how pop culture has shifted our view of human development. Furthermore, this course will provide insight into current methodological research and approaches in the context of cultural and lifespan development.
Time and Place

Module | Title | Description |
---|---|---|
Module 1 | Understanding Culture and Life-Span Development: Concept and Current Perspectives | This module will revisit our paradigm of culture and how we contextualize it in today's global conditions. The discussion will delve into the influence of the global north-global south paradigm on life-span development. Furthermore, it will explore the impact of our digital interactions and the looming climate crisis on our perspectives of life-span development. |
Module 2 | Methods for Contextual Life-Span Development: Research and Intervention | In the upcoming second module, we will delve deeply into the methodologies for researching human development. This module will encompass a comprehensive exploration of various facets of life-span development research, including integrating cultural diversity, optimally utilizing action research and photovoice techniques, and the ethical principles inherent in this field. |
Module 3 | Thematic Explorations of Contextual Research and Intervention on Life-Span Development | The third module will consist of two distinct sessions: research and intervention. Throughout this module, expert-led discussions will explore integrating cultural perspectives and life-span developmental methodologies into research and practical contexts. The "research session" will delve into utilizing cultural and indigenous methodologies within life-span developmental research. Conversely, the "intervention session" will involve dialogues with experts highlighting the significance of cultural considerations in interventions, such as those addressing bullying, youth dynamics, and empowering older adults. |
Module 4 | Manuscript Writing Workshop (optional) | At the end of the summer course, students can prepare their research canvas and manuscript to secure their seats in our exclusive workshop. The workshop will be held in offline settings and will discuss how to write a manuscript efficiently. This workshop will offer students an opportunity to discuss their research with our experts. This workshop, spanning 4 hours over 2 days, will provide a total of 8 hours of immersive learning. Students will have the opportunity to consult, review, and receive feedback on their submitted proposals, all of which will be centered on the fascinating and crucial fields of cultural psychology and growing up in context. |
